What Is The Correct Tire Pressure For My Car?

Having the correct air pressure in your tires can help you get the most out of your vehicle. The proper air pressure helps your car handle better on the road, allows for a more even tire wear and can help with better gas mileage. Learn more about your vehicle’s recommended tire pressure.

CHECK TIRE PRESSURES OFTEN

Tires lose pressure daily, especially when the temperature changes. In colder weather, tires can lose one to two pounds a month. It is recommended to check your tire pressures a few times a month and don’t forget your spare. Be aware that many vehicles have different tire pressures on the front and rear axles. If your tires are underinflated, they can cause poor performance and decrease your gas mileage. Under-inflated tires can also cause premature tire wear from the increased friction.

WHAT IS THE CORRECT TIRE PRESSURE FOR MY CAR?

The right tire pressure for your car can be found in a few places. Your vehicle’s owner's manual will provide you with the correct air pressure for your specific vehicle. This information should also be listed on the tire placard on your driver’s side door jamb, door post, or fuel door. Please do not inflate your tires to the air pressure listed on your tire itself. This number is the maximum pressure the tire can hold. It is NOT the recommended pressure for your tire. Be sure not to overinflate your tires as they could cause damage to your tire or vehicle.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY TIRES NEED MORE AIR?

If your car, truck, or SUV has low tire pressures, the TPMS light will appear on your dashboard. This indicator light means that one or more of your tires is underinflated. Once you add more air to the affected tire(s) and drive it a bit to get an updated reading, the light should turn off. If the light stays on, there could be other issues causing the low-pressure reading. There could be a puncture on the surface of the tire causing a slow leak. Or the TPMS sensor may be going bad. If you aren’t sure what is causing the light to stay on, have a Lou’s Car Care technician help you find a solution.
