How Often Should I Wash My Car?

Washing your car not only helps to preserve the paint and finish but it also aides in keeping rust and corrosion underneath your vehicle at bay. Car washes are as essential to maintaining your vehicle just as a regular oil change is. But how often you should wash your car depends on a number of factors. Answer the following questions to determine the right number of washes for you:

What is your weather like? Without a doubt, cold climates will require you to wash your vehicle more frequently. Irregular dirt like salt buildup and other chemical stains in the winter can cause damage to your vehicle’s paint and corrode the metal components of the undercarriage. Dirt, salt and residue can retain moisture leading to rust around car parts and metal components if you don’t wash your car often. Rust and corrosion are very common factors in major auto repairs (even on newer vehicles) that could have been avoided or delayed by frequent car washes. An undercarriage rinse is high recommended.

Where do you park? Uncovered parking exposes your vehicle to the environment for long periods of time and can cause more damage than vehicles parked indoors. Parking under trees can offer shade to the vehicle but makes it susceptible to bird droppings, sap, insects and stains from certain tree fruits, such as berries.

How far is your commute?  Do you drive long or short distances? Highway driving leaves your car vulnerable to dust, gravel and cement from construction sites. You may also be prone to bug splatter and road debris when driving long distances.

What is your budget? Maintaining the cleanliness of your vehicle doesn’t have to be a big expense. Take a look at your monthly budget to determine how much you can afford to spend on car washes.

A general recommendation is to wash your vehicle at least once a month. If you live in colder climates or travel long distances, washing your vehicle once a week (especially in the winter months) or twice a month will preserve your car’s integrity and keep it from rusting. It is important to consider car washing as part of the regular maintenance process in the up-keep of your vehicle.
